Jazz in the Pass set for Sunday

Pass Christian's War Memorial Park will once again be filled with toe-tapping live music echoing over the Mississippi Sound on Memorial Day weekend. Jazz in the Pass returns to the Park on Sunday from 2 to 7 p.m., -- for the first time since 2005.

The event is free and open to all. Attendees are encouraged to bring their own chairs (and to leave glass containers at home). Food and drinks will be available for sale.

The event will kick off with performances from the St. Stanislaus College Jazz Band and the Mississippi Gulf Coast Jazz Society. The schedule then includes Pass Christian favorite Starz, Band of Gold from the Mississippi Gulf Coast and the Thaddeus Richards All Stars from New Orleans.

Details: 363-1973.

Jolting numbers on caffeine

Caffeine is not included in the Nutrition Facts panel on food labels because it is not a nutrient. It must be listed as an ingredient if it is added to food, but the amount is not required.

The U.S. government doesn't have recommendations for children's caffeine intake, though the American Academy of Pediatrics suggests a limit of 100 mg a day for adolescents. Here are amounts of caffeine in milligrams of common beverages:

Monster energy drink (16 ounces): 160

Starbucks Frappuccino (9.5 ounces): 115

Amp energy drink (8.4 ounces): 74

Mountain Dew (12 ounces): 54

Snapple (peach, 16 ounces): 42

Coca-Cola (12 ounces): 35

Hot cocoa (8 ounces): 9
