TiVo Mini review

TiVo Mini review

TiVo fans who want to be able to watch whatever they want, in any room that they want can finally stop waiting. Sure, some have been satisfied with TiVo's Multi-Room Viewing even though it required multiple DVRs with the multiple Now Playing lists and multiple ToDo lists that go with them. But for those TiVo fans who want a single whole-home DVR, the TiVo Mini is available to order for $99 plus a $6-per-month subscription, or $249 for the device with lifetime service. This is less than the cost of another TiVo, but more than most set-top boxes available at retail. Of course the Mini can do what most less expensive retail boxes cannot; take the place of a DVR and deliver the most popular programming source in America, premium cable TV. Exactly how well it extends the TiVo experience to another room is what you'll find out if you click through.

World class golf at Adare Manor in Ireland - Breaking Travel News

One of most renowned destinations in Ireland, Adare Manor Hotel & Golf Resort offers an unsurpassed level of accommodation, service, dining, and a range activities that have earned it a list of prestigious awards and accolades almost as long as its history.

Located on 840 acres of formal gardens, the resort offers a variety of accommodation options, including the architectural masterpiece that is the Manor House, as well as luxury villas and family-friendly townhouses.

An incredible range of outdoor activities, from golfing on a championship course that is considered one of the finest in Ireland to fishing, horseback riding, archery, clay shooting, and falconry recall the lifestyle and leisure pursuits of the country squire who originally built the Manor House.

After a day of vigorous activity, guests can enjoy pampering treatments at the Treatment Rooms and some of the finest dining in Ireland.

Adare Manor was originally built for the Second Earl of Dunraven and his wife, Lady Caroline Wyndham. Begun in 1832, the magnificent structure provided labour for the surrounding villagers during the terrible potato famine that devastated the country during the mid-19th century.

Though Lady Caroline went to great lengths to establish the myth that Adare Manor was planned entirely by her husband without an architect, it is fairly certain today that much of the design work was done by James Pain who, along with AW Pugin and PC Hardwick, had been commissioned to design numerous public buildings and country homes.

The actual construction was supervised by James Connolly, a local mason. Sadly Lord Dunraven did not live to see his dream Manor finished in 1862.

Golf Holidays

Now, however, the property is known around the world as the home of some of the finest golf in Ireland.

The resort features an 18-hole championship course designed by Robert Trent Jones Sr. that has gained international acclaim as one of his finest creations.

The course, which measures 7,453 yards from the championship tees, is a majestic design with rock-walled streams and subtle undulating putting surfaces with the Jones? signature cloverleaf bunkers.

A 14-acre lake dominates the front nine while the back nine is routed through woodland. Adding beauty to all of this, the River Maigue meanders through the course creating a sense of beauty and adding a further challenge.

Spa Breaks

Overlooking the formal gardens and parkland golf course, The Treatment Rooms at Adare Manor were created as a sanctuary for pampering, relaxation and revitalisation. A team of expert therapists provide a full range of massage, body, facial and beauty treatments featuring Elemis spa products.

The Fitness Room is fully equipped with free weights, Nautilus equipment, treadmill, Stairmaster and lifecycles. Adjacent to the Fitness Room and overlooking the River Maigue, is a 15-meter heated indoor swimming pool and steam room, with changing rooms and locker facilities.

Where to Stay

The Manor House guestrooms are the most exclusive accommodation on the resort.

This architectural masterpiece of towers, turrets, and stonework ornamentation surrounded by breathtaking gardens, majestic trees and ruins dates back over eight hundred years and offers the most elegant castle setting imaginable.

The Manor House has 62 rooms in five different categories: one Presidential Suite, four Dunraven Staterooms, eight Staterooms, 34 Deluxe rooms and 15 Standard rooms.

All of the rooms feature unique architectural details, high ceilings, marble bathrooms and are available with either one king sized bed or two queen sized beds. Some of the bedrooms have fireplaces that are works of art in themselves, with hand carved wood and imported tiles and marble from all over the world.

Niacin therapy shows no benefits, has some harmful effects

Mar. 9, 2013 ? A highly anticipated study evaluating a combination of the vitamin niacin with the anti-flushing agent laropiprant finds the therapy provides no benefit to and may even be harmful for patients with vascular disease, according to research presented today at the American College of Cardiology's 62nd Annual Scientific Session. Detailed trial data is presented here for the first time.

Heart Protection Study 2-Treatment of HDL to Reduce the Incidence of Vascular Events (HPS2-THRIVE) is the largest-ever study of niacin, commonly used to raise high-density lipoprotein (HDL) or "good" cholesterol and lower low-density lipoprotein (LDL) or "bad" cholesterol. The four-year study tested a combination of extended-release (ER) niacin with laropiprant in patients at risk for cardiovascular problems such as heart disease and stroke. The 25,673 patients in the study were randomized to receive ER niacin/laropiprant 2g/40mg or a placebo, and all received commonly prescribed LDL cholesterol-lowering medication simvastatin (with or without ezetimibe). The study did not meet the primary endpoint of reducing the chances of a major vascular event, defined as the composite of non-fatal heart attack or heart-related death, stroke, or need for angioplasty or bypass surgery. Patients receiving ER niacin/laropiprant had a similar number of major vascular events as patients receiving placebo (13.2 vs. 13.7 percent, p=0.29).

The study also found unexpected and significant excesses of bleeding (2.5 vs. 1.9 percent) and infections (8.0 vs. 6.6 percent) among the ER niacin/laropiprant patients. In addition, significantly higher numbers of patients receiving the study drug suffered serious known side effects including new onset diabetes (9.1 vs. 7.3 percent), diabetic complications (11.1 vs. 7.5 percent), gastrointestinal problems such as indigestion and diarrhea (4.8 vs. 3.8 percent), and skin issues including itching and rashes (0.7 vs. 0.4 percent).

"We are disappointed that these results did not show benefits for our patients," said Jane Armitage, FFPH, FRCP, professor at the University of Oxford and the lead author of the HPS2-THRIVE study. "Still, finding out a drug is not helping people is just as important as finding that it has benefits -- the net result is that people are healthier. Niacin has been used for many years in the belief that it would help patients and prevent heart attacks and stroke, but we now know that its adverse side effects outweigh the benefits when used with current treatments."

A high level of LDL cholesterol is a known risk factor for heart disease and stroke. Standard treatment for at-risk patients includes dietary and lifestyle changes, as well as commonly prescribed medications such as statins, cholesterol absorption inhibitors and resins. Still, heart disease and stroke continue to cause death and disability even in patients receiving these medications, notes Dr. Armitage, and there was hope that the addition of niacin to standard therapy would improve patient outcomes.

Niacin is a type of B-vitamin, but the therapeutic doses used to control cholesterol are about 100 times higher than the amount recommended as part of daily intake. Laropiprant was added to reduce the facial flushing caused by niacin. While there was some speculation that the trial's results may have been due to unexpected side effects of laropiprant, Dr. Armitage believes this is unlikely, as the lack of benefit on heart attacks and strokes is consistent with the recent AIM-HIGH study, which did not use laropiprant, and many of the side effects are known to be due to niacin.

In 2011, AIM-HIGH was halted early when researchers determined a lack of effect for niacin in reducing cardiovascular events. Some experts in the field dismissed AIM-HIGH's findings because of its smaller size and perceived lack of ability to demonstrate definitive outcomes. Dr. Armitage notes that the size and scope of HPS2-THRIVE make its findings about niacin's outcomes and side effects reliable.

Patients taking niacin preparations to prevent heart disease should consider talking with their health care providers to determine whether the therapy is appropriate to continue.

ER niacin/laropiprant has been approved in 70 countries and was being sold in 40. The Food and Drug Administration was awaiting results from HPS2-THRIVE to license the drug in the U.S. In response to preliminary findings, the drug manufacturer Merck announced in December 2012 that it no longer planned to take the drug before the FDA for approval and in January suspended ER niacin/laropiprant from markets worldwide.

Selectively manipulating protein modifications

Mar. 10, 2013 ? Protein activity is strictly regulated. Incorrect or poor protein regulation can lead to uncontrolled growth and thus cancer or chronic inflammation. Members of the Institute of Veterinary Biochemistry and Molecular Biology from the University of Zurich have identified enzymes that can regulate the activity of medically important proteins. Their discovery enables these proteins to be manipulated very selectively, opening up new treatment methods for inflammations and cancer.

For a healthy organism, it is crucial for proteins to be active or inactive at the right time. The corresponding regulation is often based on a chemical modification of the protein structure: Enzymes attach small molecules to particular sites on a protein or remove them, thereby activating or deactivating the protein. Members of the Institute of Veterinary Biochemistry and Molecular Biology from the University of Zurich in collaboration with other Institutes have now discovered how the inactivation of a protein, which is important for medicine, can be reversed.

New group of ADP-ribosylhydrolases identified

An important protein modification is ADP-ribosylation, which is involved in certain types of breast cancer, cellular stress reactions and gene regulation. So-called ADP-ribosyltransferases attach the ADP ribose molecule to proteins, thereby altering their function. In recent years, many ADP-ribosyltransferases have been discovered that can convey single or several ADP-riboses to different proteins. Enzymes that can remove these riboses again, however, are less well known. Professor Michael Hottiger's team of researchers has now identified a new group of such ADP-ribosylhydrolases. The scientists discovered that a so-called macrodomain is responsible for removing the ADP-riboses in human proteins, but also in the bacterium Archaeoglobus fulgidus. "We therefore assume that the reversal of the modification takes place in a similar way in different species," explains Michael Hottiger.

Biomedically relevant: inactivation of the modified enzyme GSK3?

The researchers also prove that ADP-ribosylhydrolases can remove the ADP-ribose of the intensively studied enzyme GSK3?, which regulates the synthesis of storage substances and is important in the progression of various diseases. ADP-ribosylation deactivates GSK3?, which can be reversed again by the newly identified enzyme. "Our discovery enables ADP-ribose modification to be manipulated and tested selectively, and new treatment methods developed for diseases such as inflammations or cancer," concludes Michael Hottiger.

Why I stopped reading most computer magazines -

Back in the early days of computing, magazines were one of the only sources of information about new software, games, trends and hardware. While you had your friends who sometimes know about things to come, and the BBS system if you had access to an expensive modem that was nearly as slow as sending the data via snail mail, there was not really a way around magazines at that time.

Magazines back then provided us with information that we were interested in and had a hard time coming by in any other fashion. While they surely were not of better quality than the magazines today, they had the advantage that they were one of the only sources for people interested in computers. Today, magazines face the same problem that newspapers face: they have new competition in form of the Internet.

Computer magazines had their purpose back in the days but today and in their current format, they do not really serve that purpose anymore.

  • Their contents are usually out of date when the magazine comes out. Most come out monthly which means that you may end up with information that you read about a month ago or even earlier elsewhere. It does not make sense to write about a security vulnerability or phishing attack that came out a a week ago or even earlier than that as it is old news.
  • The majority of contents they include are available on thousands of Internet sites as well. I do not really need a magazine anymore to tell me that a new program came just out when in fact it has been out for a while and reviewed on dozens of Internet sites already.
  • Most magazines do not offer exclusive contents, like well researched articles that offer insights that you do not find anywhere online. Instead, they tend to post the very same line of articles over and over again. In Germany, every computer magazine seems to run a monthly ?the ultimate USB drive? article that no one seems to be interested in anymore because it has been posted that often.
  • They can?t make direct use of the Internet. When I post a review, I can add a link to the developer website directly to it so that it does take a click to go there and download the program.

I suppose there is still room for magazines out there, but when it comes to that, it is usually the specialized magazines I?m interested in and not the mainstream tech magazines or game magazines.

What about you? Do you still read computer magazines? If so, which do you read? If not, what is your reason for not doing so?

PFT: Tackle Gaither staying in San Diego for now

HarvinGetty Images

Vikings receiver Percy Harvin reportedly wants out of Minnesota.? He also reportedly wants to be paid like Lions receiver Calvin Johnson.

But Harvin is overlooking one important reality.? He?ll have to find a team that wants him, and a team that will pay him what he wants.

As one NFL front-office source explains it, Harvin and his agent forget that a large portion of the league had him off of their draft boards in 2009, due to his reputation for being a pain in the posterior.

In Minnesota, the Vikings have done a nice job of keeping Harvin from being too much of a problem, at least publicly.? Under former coach Brad Childress, then-defensive coordinator Leslie Frazier often was the peacekeeper.? Now that Harvin and Frazier reportedly had a ?heated exchange? that preceded Harvin?s placement on injured reserve, Harvin may be out of allies in Minnesota.

That doesn?t mean he?ll have friends elsewhere.? Especially if he gets the kind of money he wants.? If/when (if) he cashes in, Harvin will be largely untouchable, free to do what he wants, how he wants, when he wants.

Even though there are plenty of desperate coaches and General Managers in the NFL, there?s a difference between desperation and stupidity.? For Harvin, the key word could be delusion.

If there?s no team who will both trade for him and pay him, he?ll continue to be the property of the Vikings.? And the manner in which he handles himself during the final year of his contract will go a long way toward shaping the extent to which other teams will, or won?t, be interested in him once he hits the open market.

And if he decides to hold out, the Vikings can fine him hundreds of thousands of dollars and, if he doesn?t show up by Week 10, squat on his rights through 2014.

Jeb Bush on 2016 speculation: ?Man, you guys are crack addicts?

Jeb Bush on NBC's "Today" show (Getty Images)

Capping what felt like an endless week of book promotion and positioning for 2016, Jeb Bush appeared on all five major morning talk shows on Sunday, saying he supports a conditional path to citizenship?a point he seemed to stumble on earlier in the week?and claiming he hasn't talked about a potential White House run with his father or brother.

"I don't want to begin the process until it's the proper time to do so," Bush?the younger brother of George W. Bush and second son of George H.W. Bush?said on NBC's "Meet The Press."

The former Republican Florida governor's media blitz behind "Immigration Wars: Forging an American Solution" has led many political observers to speculate he has an eye on continuing the family's presidential legacy.

"I'm not viewing this as a political reentry either," he said on "This Week With George Stephanopoulos" on ABC. "I just don't view it that way."

"Man, you guys are crack addicts," Bush told David Gregory of the speculation. "You're really obsessed with all this politics."

But while he may be publicly avoiding talk about 2016, Bush had plenty to say about 2012.

President Barack Obama, he said, won the election over Mitt Romney by "dividing the country."

?I think the basic part of his campaign was that those that were successful weren?t paying their fair share, even though we have incredibly high taxes for high income Americans,? Bush said on CBS? ?Face The Nation.? ?I think he ran a campaign of them and us. And it was quite effective, that somehow the Republicans don?t care about the large number of people.?

On "This Week," he criticized Obama's lack of seriousness on to reach a deal with Republicans to reduce the national debt. "I haven't seen the seriousness of the president's efforts," he said. "I'd love to see a specific plan that really did reform the cost curve for Medicare and the entitlement system."

Meanwhile on "Meet The Press," Bush praised President George W. Bush's legacy. "In his four years as president a lot of amazing accomplishments took place," he said. "So my guess is that history will be kind to my brother, the further out you get from this and the more people compare his tenure to what's going on now."

Jeb Bush, a 60-year-old Texas native and resident of Coral Gables, served two terms as governor of Florida, from 1999 to 2007.

[Related: Jeb Bush's book promotion hits a few snags]

On Monday, Bush surprised some with his Monday comments on NBC's "Today" show when he said that most undocumented immigrants should have a chance to legalize but not to gain citizenship?unless they return to their home countries and apply from there. On Tuesday, he appeared to walk back those comments, saying he's open to an immigration reform bill that includes a path to citizenship.

On Sunday's ?Face The Nation,? Bush continued the walk-back.

?I support a path to legalization or citizenship," he said, "so long as the path for people that have been waiting patiently is easier and costs less?the legal entrance to our country?than illegal entrance."

PHOENIX (AP) ? A little bunt single turned this WBC matchup into a World Boxing Classic.

Alfredo Aceves and several players threw nasty punches when a fierce, full-scale brawl broke out in the ninth inning Saturday of Canada's 10-3 romp over Mexico in the World Baseball Classic, a melee that also involved fans and set off skirmishes in the seats.

"Whoever says that we're just here as an extra spring training game or we're just here to say we represented our country and then go home obviously didn't see how intense that game was and what it means to everybody that was involved," Canadian slugger Justin Morneau said.

Multiple fights erupted after Canada's Rene Tosoni was hit in the back by a pitch from Arnold Leon with the score 9-3 at Chase Field, home of the Arizona Diamondbacks. It quickly turned into a wild scene, as chaotic as any on a major league field in recent years.

Even when the fisticuffs ended, Canadian pitching coach Denis Boucher was hit in the face by a full water bottle thrown from the crowd. Canada shortstop Cale Iorg angrily threw the bottle back into the crowd.

Several police officers came onto the field trying to restore order, and there were a few skirmishes in the decidedly pro-Mexico crowd of 19,581. Seven players were ejected after umpires huddled, trying to sort out the frenzy.

Canadian first base coach Larry Walker, a former NL MVP, said he held back Mexico star Adrian Gonzalez during the altercation. The solidly built Walker also tried to restrain Aceves.

"I had a hold of him and I thought I saw Satan in his eyes," Walker said.

There had already been several borderline plays on the bases when things got out of hand. A bunt hit by Chris Robinson heightened the tension ? a WBC tiebreaker relies heavily on runs and the Canadians wanted to score again in the ninth. Third baseman Luis Cruz fielded Robinson's bunt and seemed to tell Leon to hit the next batter.

Managers from both teams blamed the tiebreaking rule that uses run differential to determine what team moves on to the next round.

"It was just simply a misunderstanding," Mexico manager Rick Renteria said. "In a normal setting, a normal professional setting I should say, a 9-3 bunt in that particular fashion would be kind of out of the ordinary."

Right as the game resumed, someone in the crowd hurled a baseball that almost hit Walker in the head.

"That's when I went out to the umpire and I said, 'Another thing comes out, we're going to pull our team off the field," Canadian manager Ernie Whitt said.

The collision of WBC rules and the unwritten rules of the game led to the blowup, Renteria said.

"I think in just in the heat of the moment you lose sight of it," he said, "and maybe that's how it occurred."

Whitt said WBC officials need to look at the tiebreaking rule.

"There's got to be another method other than the scoring runs, running up the score on the opposing team," he said. "No one likes that. That's not the way baseball's supposed to be played. There's professionalism that we're all accustomed to here in North America. And unfortunately teams are knocked out of the tournament because other teams run up the score on them. Unfortunately that's what you have to deal with when you have that type of format."

Morneau, Gonzalez and Joey Votto were among the big-name, high-priced stars playing in the game. The fight was exactly the kind of thing that must have made major league managers and general managers cringe at the thought of one of their players getting hurt in such a fracas.

"There's a point you got to stand up for yourself," said Morneau, a former MVP with the Minnesota Twins. "We got hit for playing the game, and that happens, but at the same time you got to stand up for yourself. You can't just get pushed around."

"Obviously everyone wishes it didn't happen, but it happens in the game sometimes," he said. " I think we have all learned from being in the minor leagues that, especially in low-A ball, high-A ball, those things get real crazy. There's not as much security. It starts to get out of control pretty bad, and I think you learn from that, you learn to keep your head on a swivel."

Aceves was among four Mexican players thrown out ? the angry Boston reliever was tossed to the ground by Philadelphia minor league outfielder Tyson Gillies during the height of the fury, then rushed to rejoin the fray.

Also ejected were Leon, Oliver Perez and Eduardo Arredondo of Mexico and Tosoni, Pete Orr and Jay Johnson of Canada. A statement from organizers said tape of the incident would be reviewed for possible disciplinary action.

All in all, it was far from the worldwide goodwill that is supposed to accompany this competition, where players exchange team hats with opponents before the start of each game as a sign of sportsmanship.

A day earlier on the same field, Mexico posted an emotional 5-2 over the United States in a game without incident. Canada, meanwhile, absorbed an embarrassing 14-4 loss to Italy.

Mexico finished its Pool D play at 1-2. Canada is 1-1 going into a game Sunday against the United States.

Whitt said he hoped any decision on suspensions would take into account that Mexico has finished its pool play, while Canada has a big game remaining.

Canada scored four times in the first inning, and Mexico cut the lead to 4-3 with two runs in the fourth.

Karim Garcia, Edgar Gonzalez and pinch hitter Sebastian Valle started the inning with singles. Garcia tried to score from second on Valle's single and was thrown out from center field by Gillies.

Robinson, the catcher, held on to the ball in a collision with Garcia down the third-base line. Garcia never did touch the plate.

Gil Velazquez followed with an RBI double and Arrendondo's sacrifice fly cut Canada's lead to one.

Robinson's hard slide into second broke up a potential double play and allowed a run to score in a two-run seventh inning that put the Canadians ahead 7-3.

Morneau, who had four hits and drove in three runs, doubled in a run, then Michael Saunders walked and Robinson was hit in the foot by a pitch. With one out, pinch hitter Jimmy Van Ostrand grounded to second.

But Robinson took the legs out from Velazquez at shortstop to prevent the relay throw and a run scored.

"'We want to play the game hard. We want to play it properly. You get an opportunity to help a team, help your teammates, by breaking up a double play or something, that's something we do," Robinson said.

All that led up to the ninth, with Mexico trailing badly and facing possible elimination despite the big win over the United States.

Robinson bunted because Canada wanted to widen the margin.

Two pitches came close to Tosoni and the next one hit him in the back. He dropped the bat and walked toward the mound.

When the players all rushed onto the field. Some just shoved, other threw wild haymakers. And just when it seemed things would calm down, more skirmishes ensued.

When the bottle was thrown from behind the Canadian dugout, one Canada player had to be restrained from going into the stands.

No player seemed to be hurt.

"I know the bodies kept moving everywhere but there was a lot more people holding people back than there was real action going on," Renteria said, "as is always the case."

As for his team, Whitt said, "You can't hurt Canadians."

GOP splits over immigration and terrorism play out

WASHINGTON (AP) ? Republican Party divisions over immigration, anti-terrorism and other issues are bubbling to the surface just as President Barack Obama shows a new interest in capitalizing on GOP differences.

The latest example played out Thursday on the Senate floor, where two Republican senators rebuked a third ? tea party favorite Rand Paul of Kentucky ? for his filibuster that challenged U.S. policies for using drones to kill suspected terrorists. Just a few days earlier, other high-profile Republicans had differed on immigration, and a House committee chairman renewed his call for spending cuts that would go much deeper than those now making headlines.

Every case featured past or possibly future presidential candidates. It was a fresh reminder that the party has no clear leader, and no clear road map, after Mitt Romney's November loss to Obama.

The quarrels also underscore the Republican establishment's uneasy relationship with the tea party. That grass-roots movement, born in 2009, pumped new passion into the GOP, but it also fueled unwise Senate nominations that saved several endangered Democrats.

Every party undergoes self-examination and blame-swapping after losing a presidential race. The Republicans' intramural disputes may eventually lead to greater solidarity and popularity.

Some party activists, however, are warily watching Obama launch a new outreach to rank-and-file Republicans, including his Wednesday night dinner with a dozen GOP senators at a posh Washington restaurant.

"The president recognizes the fractures within the Republican Party and is moving to try to take advantage of them with a charm offensive," said GOP pollster Steve Lombardo. Republicans should react carefully, he said, because voters "want to see each side extend an olive branch and work together."

First, however, top Republicans must resolve some of their own differences. And either by choice or trial-and-error, the GOP must decide how closely to align its identity with the tea party movement, whose fiercely small-government philosophy draws relatively low approval ratings in national polls.

Paul, the son of libertarian hero and three-time presidential contender Ron Paul, drew widespread attention this week with a nearly 13-hour Senate filibuster. He demanded assurances from the Obama administration that unmanned aircraft would not be used in the United States to kill terrorism suspects who are U.S. citizens.

Many Republicans say Paul and his father are so libertarian in their outlook that they operate outside the party mainstream. But Paul's filibuster drew active support from several tea party-leaning senators, including Marco Rubio of Florida, who possibly could vie with Paul and others for the 2016 presidential nomination. Also helping with the filibuster were more traditional Republican senators such as John Cornyn of Texas and John Thune of South Dakota.

That sharpened the drama Thursday, when Republican Sens. John McCain of Arizona and Lindsey Graham of South Carolina claimed the Senate floor to chide Paul and to defend the administration's drone policies.

McCain, the party's 2008 presidential nominee, and Graham are frequent guests on national talk shows. They rank among the party's best-known members, and they attended Obama's dinner Wednesday.

Their critiques of Paul's actions were acidic at times. McCain read approvingly from a Wall Street Journal editorial titled "Rand Paul's Drone Rant." McCain said Paul's reasoning did not match his "showmanship."

McCain and Graham are among pro-military Republicans unhappy with a tea-party-backed push to cut spending across the board, including in the Pentagon. The recently enacted "sequester" cuts were seen as a triumph for conservatives, especially in the House, who place their highest priority on refusing to raise income taxes on anyone, even if it means reducing military spending.

These House Republicans, led by 2012 vice presidential nominee Paul Ryan of Wisconsin, now promise to pass a 10-year budget plan that will call for much deeper spending cuts, including significant changes to Medicare.

The move carries risks, say moderate Republicans. They cite polls showing substantial public support for a balance of tax increases and spending cuts to tame the deficit.

A survey by the centrist Republican Main Street group found that most Americans feel the Republican Party chiefly "looks out for rich guys," said the organization's president, Steve LaTourette. The former Ohio congressman said the party's self-examination, on balance, is healthy and essential, and he thinks Republicans outflanked Democrats in the sequester showdown.

Virginia-based Republican consultant Chris LaCivita said the intraparty debate is healthy and should reassure voters the GOP is vigorous and transparent.

Obama is appealing to Graham and other Republicans who say new taxes on the rich might be possible if Democrats agree to tackle the long-term funding problems of Medicare and Social Security. Most Republican leaders adamantly oppose any increases in income taxes.

Other internal debates that Republicans must resolve include gun control and immigration. Sen. Charles Grassley of Iowa was the only Republican on the Judiciary Committee this week to vote with Democrats to make it a felony to buy a gun for someone who could not pass a background check.

Regarding immigration, Romney and other GOP candidates did poorly among Hispanic voters, many of whom see the party's immigration policies as a slap at all Latinos.

Rubio, the son of Cuban immigrants, is heading a Republican effort to craft immigration legislation to counter Obama's proposals.

Another prominent Republican, former Florida Gov. Jeb Bush, created a stir this week by saying he did not support a pathway to citizenship for illegal immigrants, even if they have lived peacefully for years in the United States. Bush, whose father and brother were presidents, tried to soften the comments later, but they served to remind everyone that Republicans face difficult debates over immigration.

The 2016 presidential race could possibly attract Bush, Rubio, Ryan, Paul, Thune and numerous other Republicans, including Govs. Chris Christie of New Jersey and Bobby Jindal of Louisiana.

The 2012 Republican primary featured exhaustive and often unwieldy debates. Catering to hard-core conservatives who dominate primaries, Romney and his rivals veered to the right on many issues, a process that many feel hurt Romney among centrist voters in the general election against Obama.

With tea party-backed House Republicans thus far dominating the tax-and-spending debate, it's unclear whether the GOP can avoid similar clashes in 2016. Before it confronts that question, however, the party must move closer to consensus and intraparty peace over immigration, anti-terrorism and other matters.

This week's back and forth in the Senate indicates the soul-searching will go on a while longer.

1 dead, 5 rescued from CA racing sailboat accident

(AP) ? A sailor died and five others were rescued after abandoning a racing boat that lost its steering capability and drifted to an island off Southern California, where it was broken apart by crashing waves.

The Coast Guard says the crew issued a mayday call Friday night after the 30-foot sailboat's rudder failed and the craft began drifting toward the rocky shore of San Clemente Island.

Petty Officer Connie Gawrelli says the crew declined assistance from the Coast Guard and requested a tow boat. However, rough seas kept that boat from getting to them.

An organizer of the Islands Race says the crew encountered more bad luck when attempts to deploy a life raft and anchor the boat failed.

Gawrelli said the accident occurred amid 8-foot swells and strong winds.

CableDrops Hold Your Cables Anywhere, Gravity Be Damned

CableDrops Hold Your Cables Anywhere, Gravity Be DamnedCable drops are little nubs of rubbery plastic that adhere to pretty much any surface and hold to your cables tight, whether they're hanging off a desk, upside down, or right-side up. Of course, if you need to remove them you can pull them out and put them back with little effort.

I've been using cable drops for years, love them, and realized we've failed to feature them on Lifehacker. You can get a similar hack with magnets and binder clips, which is great in some situations but easy to accidentally knock out of place in others. CableDrops stick to pretty much any surface and stay there. You can position them underneath a disk to guide cables where you want them to go and prevent them from hanging down. You can also keep them on the side or top of your desk for easy access to cables you need regularly. CableDrops work very well because they're versatile, and they come in a variety of colors (white, black, neon colors, and muted colors) for around $10 for a six-pack (some cost more, some less). It's not a bad price to get a few, try them out, and see if they work well for you.

Asian shares rise, dollar at fresh peak vs yen before jobs

TOKYO (Reuters) - The dollar touched a fresh 3-1/2-year peak against the yen and Asian shares rose on Friday, as gains in U.S. stocks on solid data and Chinese exports beating forecast underpinned investor risk sentiment while denting demand for safe-haven gold.

European markets are seen edging higher, with financial spreadbetters predicting London's FTSE 100, Paris's CAC-40 and Frankfurt's DAX would open up about 0.2 percent. A 0.1 percent rise in U.S. stock futures pointed to a steady Wall Street start.

Preceding the release of U.S. nonfarm payrolls, China said February exports grew 21.8 percent from a year earlier, more than double the estimated rise, while imports fell 15.2 percent, deeper than an 8.8 percent drop forecast.

"The growth in exports probably reflected an improving global economic environment, including the United States, while the drop in imports is likely distorted by the effect from the Lunar Year holidays during the month," said Hirokazu Yuihama, a senior strategist at Daiwa Securities in Tokyo.

"The fall in imports does not suggest weakness in domestic demand and the trade data overall doesn't change the outlook for a moderate recovery in China," he said.

The MSCI's broadest index of Asia-Pacific shares outside Japan rose 0.5 percent, on track for a weekly gain of 0.8 percent.

Australian shares added 0.3 percent while the Australian dollar briefly rose after the Chinese data to around $1.0265 before easing to trade down 0.2 percent at 1.0244. New Zealand shares closed at a record high.

Hong Kong shares surged 1.8 percent while Shanghai shares rose 0.3 percent.

"We see economic recovery in China already, so it will be important to see how that is translated into the earnings recovery for Chinese companies," said Benjamin Chang, chief executive officer of LBN Advisors, a firm that manages more than $400 million in two China funds.

Investors now awaited key U.S. jobs data due at 1330 GMT for further signs of strength in the world's largest economy. Analysts expect a rise of 160,000 jobs in February.

Friday's payrolls report is key to gauging the U.S. Federal Reserve's policy course as the Fed will keep its near-zero rate stance until the unemployment rate falls to 6.5 percent, as long as inflation does not threaten to top 2.5 percent.

Thursday's data showing an unexpected drop in new initial jobless claims benefits last week indicated a steady economic improvement and drove the Dow Jones industrial average to an intraday record for a third consecutive session. The dollar extended its climb against the yen to a peak of 95.45.

"If the jobs data turns out to be good I think we will start to see a 95 yen to 98 yen range," said Hiroshi Maeba, head of FX trading Japan for UBS in Tokyo.

Japan's Nikkei stock average closed up 2.6 percent at its highest since September 2008.

As the dollar is increasingly bought on a firming U.S. economy, the yen has come under renewed selling pressure due to expectations the Bank of Japan will take bold reflationary measures when a new leadership takes over later this month.

The yen extended its decline against the euro to a low of 124.21 yen before inching back up to 124.85.

PATCHY GLOBAL ECONOMY

European Central Bank President Mario Draghi on Thursday suggested the bank was not in a hurry to act while noting that any threat of contagion to other euro zone members from Italy's inconclusive election results was muted.

The euro was down 0.1 percent at $1.3091, keeping most of its gains after rallying more than 1 percent on Draghi's comments on Thursday.

As U.S. equities firmed, the benchmark 10-year U.S. Treasury yield remained elevated at 1.997 percent in Asia.

Spot gold also eased 0.1 percent to $1,576.55 an ounce as investors sought higher returns and abandoned no interest-bearing bullion. For the past month since the dollar bounced off its lows against a basket of key currencies, gold has been capped below a key technical resistance of its 14-day moving average, which stood at $1,583.42 on Friday.

"Improving U.S. fundamentals and a 'positive' rise in the dollar are bostering stocks and denting gold's appeal because its investment return lags those assets which are leveraged, or are riskier," said Koichiro Kamei, managing director at financial research firm Market Strategy Institute.

Analysts expect gold to hold ranges above an immediate support of $1,545-50, with a clear break below $1,521 through $1,500 signalling the next phase of weakness.

Southeast Asian bourses remained among the region's top performers, with Indonesia advancing further to reach a record high for a third straight session.

Foreigners have raised their investment in Indonesia's government bond market to record levels this year, while also pitching into the stock market.

U.S. crude fell 0.3 percent to $91.33 a barrel and Brent also fell 0.3 percent to $110.87.

(AP) ? The last cardinal who will participate in the conclave to elect the next pope arrived in Rome on Thursday, meaning a date can now be set for the election. One U.S. cardinal said a decision on the start date is expected soon.

Some American and other cardinals had said they wanted to continue the pre-conclave meetings that have been going on all week for as long as it takes so they can discern who among them has the stuff to be pope and discuss the problems of the church.

Some Vatican-based cardinals, defensive about criticisms of the Vatican's internal governance that have been aired recently, seemed to want to get on with the vote arguing there's no reason to delay.

"Hopefully it will be a short conclave and start very soon," Vatican-based German Cardinal Paul Josef Cordes was quoted Wednesday as telling the German daily Bild. "I would compare it with a visit to the dentist ? you want to get everything over with quickly."

Thursday afternoon, U.S. Cardinal Roger Mahony tweeted that the discussions were "reaching a conclusion."

"Setting of date for conclave nearing. Mood of excitement prevails among Cardinals," he wrote.

Once the conclave starts, there is very little time for discussion. Cardinals take two votes in the morning, two votes in the afternoon ? all of them conducted in silent prayer, not chatter, amid the frescoes of the Sistine Chapel. As a result, setting the date for the start of the conclave is akin to setting the deadline for when pre-conclave deliberations will finish.

These discussions are designed to give cardinals a chance to get to know one another better and dive into the problems confronting the church and who among them is best suited to fix them.

On Thursday, for example, cardinals received a briefing on the Holy See's finances amid questions about the administration of the Vatican bureaucracy and continued suspicions about the Vatican bank.

As such, "it seems very normal and very wise" to wait to set the conclave date until all cardinals are confident that they're nearing an end to their deliberations, said the Vatican spokesman the Rev. Federico Lombardi.

The arrival in Rome on Thursday of Vietnamese Cardinal Jean-Baptiste Pham Minh Man, however, signaled at least that a vote could be taken on a start date now that all 115 cardinal electors are in place.

He entered the Vatican auditorium for Thursday's afternoon session without speaking to reporters. No vote on a conclave date was taken, Lombardi said.

For the fourth day in a row, discussions on Thursday included questions about the Holy See's administration and its relationships with dioceses around the world amid complaints that the Holy See doesn't communicate well, internally or externally.

The problems of the Holy See's internal governance have been a constant theme of deliberations this week as cardinals ? especially from the United States ? have sought information about allegations of corruption, turf wars and cronyism that were exposed by the leaks of papal documents last year.

Lombardi said the financial briefing by the heads of the Vatican's economic affairs office, the administration of the Vatican City State, and the department overseeing the Holy See's assets and personnel was designed to give the cardinals an early peek at the Holy See's financial reports, which usually come out in July.

Such a financial briefing is called for by the rules governing the period between papacies, specifically to give the cardinals a full picture of the state of the Holy See.

Lombardi refused to comment when asked if the Vatican's bank, the Institute for Religious Works, was discussed. The bank, which was created to administer the pope's works of charity, has long been the focus of scandal for the Vatican, though it has tried to clean up its reputation by submitting itself to an evaluation by the Council of Europe's Moneyval committee.

Moneyval, which helps governments adhere to internationally recognized anti-money laundering and anti-terror financing norms, gave the Holy See a passing grade in its first evaluation last summer. But the bank received poor or failing grades on a number of fronts, with its rules on customer due diligence, wire transfers and suspicious transaction reporting declared insufficient.

This week, the widely read Italian Catholic weekly Famiglia Cristiana, which is distributed free in Italian parishes each Sunday, carried an article calling for the bank to be closed on the ground that the pontificate shouldn't have direct links to the world of finance.

It argued that there are plenty of ethically minded commercial banks in Italy and elsewhere that could be trusted to manage the Holy See's assets.

"Total transparency would thus be assured and the faithful, who continue to generously donate, would know that their money given to the church ... is destined to the poor," said the article penned by historian Giorgio Campanini.

For a magazine representing the Catholic establishment in Italy to make such a call is significant, given the deference usually paid to the Holy See by the overwhelmingly Roman Catholic country.

That said, the Vatican bank has been the source of bitter battles in recent times between the Holy See and the Bank of Italy, which doesn't have regulatory control over the bank and has taken measures to strangle its financial activities in Italy.

AdvSecret.com How To Earn Money Online Part-Time? | AdvSecret ...

By Mike Zupp

Are you yearning to discover how to earn money online? You?ve heard the so-called ?gurus? proclaim how easy it is time and time again, but you still haven?t earned a single dime yet, right? They all swear by their favorite methods, but one definite way to get in the online earnings game is to start with Affiliate Marketing.

An everyday lay person can get into Affiliate Marketing by simply introducing prospects to Affiliate Vendor?s products and thereby earning a commission. On occasion, you can even make some extra income on the side by merely getting people to ?opt in? to Vendors? newsletter subscriptions!

Once you decide on which product to promote, you obtain what?s called an ?affiliate link?. This link is like a tracking device for all your referrals and it?s a way to make sure that you get your well-deserved commissions. Some of the most well-known Affiliate Marketing sites are Amazon, Clickbank, Ebay Partner Network and Commission Junction. These companies showcase thousands of products in numerous extensive niches for you to choose from.

In any event, you must figure out a good starting point if you?re going to be able to learn how to earn money online.

The first step is to pick a niche that you desire to be in: something that you love and that you could discuss all day-then it?s far easier for you to sell.

Check out the Google Keyword Tool: with this tool, you can pin down niches that are getting a lot of traffic. Then use it again to generate keywords for your chosen product. You can also search Google Trends to see if your particular niche is expanding in appeal. Clearly, do a Google search to discover these tools!

Secondly, select an affiliate product that is right for you. Make certain that you select products that interest you and that will also help solve a pressing problem for your targeted prospects. Only choose products that are of high quality and that have a good track record of sales.

Now that you have decided upon your specific niche and product, you now need to chart your product promotion. You?ll soon figure out how to earn money online by implementing the following handy strategies:

You can set the plan in motion by building a review site that will highlight your unbiased opinion of your chosen product. Make sure to address the negative, as well as the positive, features of your product in order to appear unbiased. I would also recommend that you actually buy the product so you can honestly critique it. If funds are a little low, have a look around forums and other review sites of the same product to gain pertinent knowledge of the product. Insert your affiliate link at the beginning and end of your product review article.

Social media sites can really help drive traffic to your website. You can build a Facebook fan page or add a Facebook app to an existing business page to feature your product. Just make certain that you put a link in there to redirect people to your website.

You?ve probably heard mention of ?squeeze? or ?landing? pages before, right? Well, their purpose is to ?squeeze? information, like names and email addresses, out of prospects and they can be built right inside Facebook or take the form of a one page website. You then take that assembled information and put it all into an autoresponder system. ?AWeber? is an excellent place to open one of these types of accounts. What happens next is that your prospective clients get a series of email messages in their inbox automatically over the course of a week or two. The first emails should be ?warm and friendly? since you?ll need to build a relationship with your readers to get them to know and like you. After a while, you?ll hopefully build up enough trust that your audience will click on your cleverly inserted links in the later emails and end up as paying customers!

Of course, the option is always there to put your affiliate product in the limelight by posting a quick review on your personal blog that contains your affiliate link, of course.

In addition, you can utilize the power of YouTube by producing individual video testimonials of your product for your YouTube network. A good idea would be to embed these videos into your product evaluation website! This can additionally help to raise your online search engine ranking: Google owns YouTube and that?s why videos get preferential treatment!

An additional effective method would be to join online forums that in your niche. Don?t simply go in there and begin selling your item from the outset: Instead, take part in conversations and respond to concerns that people may have, initially. Then after a while, you can start discussing your item, revealing it?s problem-solving attributes to the forum members.

The above are just a few examples of how to earn money online by following a few simple steps to promote your product. You can interchange the strategies depending on which ones are appropriate for you and your product.

I hope you found my article interesting and helpful. If you would like a more detailed guide on affiliate marketing, scoot on over to the Money Sites Max site. Those guys are the only reason I was able to decipher how to earn money online.

Hidden layer of genome unveils how plants may adapt to environments throughout the world

Hidden layer of genome unveils how plants may adapt to environments throughout the world

Thursday, March 7, 2013

Scientists at the Salk Institute for Biological Studies have identified patterns of epigenomic diversity that not only allow plants to adapt to various environments, but could also benefit crop production and the study of human diseases.

Published March 6 in Nature, the findings show that in addition to genetic diversity found in plants throughout the world, their epigenomic makeup is as varied as the environments in which they are found. Epigenomics is the study of the pattern of chemical markers that serve as a regulatory layer on top of the DNA sequence. Depending on where they grow, the plants' epigenomic differences may allow them to rapidly adapt to their environments.

Epigenomic modifications alter gene expression without changing the letters of the DNA alphabet (A-T-C-G), providing cells with an additional tool to fine-tune how genes control the cellular machinery. These changes occur not only in plants, but in humans as well.

"We looked at plants collected from around the world and found that their epigenomes are surprisingly different," says senior author Joseph R. Ecker, a professor in Salk's Plant Biology Laboratory and holder of the Salk International Council Chair in Genetics. "This additional diversity may create a way for plants to rapidly adapt to diverse environments without any genetic change in their DNA, which takes a very long time."

By understanding epigenomic alterations in plants, scientists may be able to manipulate them for various purposes, including biofuels and creating crops that can withstand stressful events such as drought. That knowledge of epigenomic changes in crop plants could tell producers what to breed for and could have a huge impact on identifying plants that can survive certain conditions and adapt to environmental stressors, says Ecker, who is also a Howard Hughes Medical Institute and Gordon and Betty Moore Foundation Investigator.

Using MethylC-Seq, a method for mapping epigenomic changes developed by Ecker, the researchers analyzed methylation patterns from a population of Arabidopsis thaliana, a modest mustard weed that has become to plant biology what laboratory mice are to animal biology. The plants were from a variety of climates in the Northern Hemisphere, from Europe to Asia and Sweden to the Cape Verde Islands. Ecker's team examined the genomes and methylomes of A. thaliana, the makeup of their entire genetic and epigenomic codes, respectively, which is the first step toward understanding the impact of epigenetic changes on the plants' physical characteristics and ability to adapt to their environment.

"We expected variation in methylation patterns among groups of plants from around the globe," says co-lead author Robert J. Schmitz, a postdoctoral researcher in Ecker's lab. "The amount, however, was far greater than we ever anticipated."

By analyzing these patterns, Ecker's team was able to chart their effects on the activity of genes in the plants' genome. Scientists know that methylation can inactivate genes, but in contrast to DNA mutations, methylation patterns are reversible, giving the plants the ability to temporarily activate genes. The identification of genes that are epigenetically regulated has greatly narrowed the potential candidates important for environmental adaptation.

Methylation silencing also occurs in humans?and that has implications for treating cancer, a hallmark of which is the silencing of tumor suppressor genes. "If these genes are turned off by the epigenome, they could potentially be turned back on by removing the DNA methylation," says study co-lead author Matthew Schultz, a graduate student in Ecker's lab. Understanding how these methylation variants form in the wild will help toward better engineering of epigenomes.

Ecker's team will next study how methylation variations affect the traits of plants. They will examine stress-induced epigenomic changes and how they might provide clues as to which alterations are most important for the plants.

ImageMSI's mid-range S30 laptop is coming to Europe for 699 euro, we go hands-on (video)

When we first heard MSI was showing off a device at CeBIT called the S30, we assumed it was the successor to the S20, the company's first Windows 8 Ultrabook. Alas, though, it's not quite an Ultrabook, and it's certainly not as well-specced a system as the S20. What we have instead is a 13-inch thin-and-light, one that's headed to Europe for €699 and up. To start with a quick rundown of the specs, it comes either a Core i3 or i5 processor, along with 4GB of RAM and a variety of storage options, with the best one being a 500GB / 64GB SSD combo.

Oddly, that 1,366 x 768 display doesn't support touch -- a surprise given the price, and given that other machines in its class do include that feature. At least the touchpad seems to do a capable job of handling all the various Windows 8 gestures. Finishing up our tour, that 23mm-thick chassis (a bit too thick by Ultrabook standards) is wide enough to accommodate an Ethernet jack, along with HDMI-out and a VGA socket. Only one USB 3.0 port (plus one 2.0 connection) seems a bit stingy, though. In any case, enjoy our hands-on video, and maybe even stay tuned for a closer look at that S20 Slider.
